A lot of the housing stock we work on around Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills and Olmos Park was not designed with a forty-foot glass wall in mind, and pretending otherwise produces bad architecture. The useful property of a slim-frame system in this context is restraint — three-quarters of an inch of aluminum at the meeting point reads as a lot less imposition on a traditional elevation than a heavy commercial frame does.
Finish matters more here than in the other three metros. Any RAL color, powder-coated or anodized, and a different finish inside from outside where the interior calls for it — a bronze or dark anodized exterior against a traditional stucco or limestone elevation, with something else entirely facing the room. It is specified per project, not chosen off a shortlist of five.
Courtyard and loggia arrangements are common in this market, and they suit a folding system better than a slider. Where the requirement is to open a whole wall onto an enclosed courtyard rather than to frame a distant view, a bifolding run that concertinas fully to one side clears the opening in a way a slider cannot.

San Antonio gets a lot of hail. Does that change the glass?
San Antonio was ranked the number one city in the United States for hail claims across 2016 to 2018, so the question is a fair one. The honest answer is that it does not change the glazing spec. Impact-resistance ratings and the insurance discounts attached to them apply to roof coverings, not windows and doors, and no adopted Texas code contains a hail provision for glass. Glazing is governed by wind load, dead load and safety-glazing rules. We would rather tell you that than sell you an upgrade the evidence does not support.
